QCP is taking books of sixteen Australian photo-media artists to PhotoBook Independent (1 – 3 May 2015). This series of focus interviews gives an insight into the selected artists.

How did you get into photography?
When I was young, around 12 years of age, I enjoyed painting. As my parents were keen amateur photographers I linked with them on shoot-outs with the local camera club. Taking photos and printing them in my family’s blacked-out bathroom darkroom captured my childhood imagination and set in train the foundations for my life. The camera and the print became my pencil, brush and canvas.

How did you arrive at the decision to create a photo book, and how is working with a book different from working on an exhibition?
For over 25 years I have resolved my art in the form of books and boxed image sets. A photobook for me is more than a collection of photographs – it is a self-contained presentation device for narratives that are sometimes enhanced by textual and typographical elements. This small package of the book is a container for ideas that can transcend time.

Tell us a bit about your book featured at PhotoBook Independent.
This book relates to the experience of being a documentary photographer within the world. The subject, a deserted artist’s studio, becomes an immersive landscape for investigation. This photobook expresses a personal narrative about loss, absence, place, and concepts around the relationship between the non-human and the working practices of artists.
