Laura Seeds is a recent graduate of the Bachelor of Photography at the Queensland College of Art, and recipient of the QCP Graduate Award, for innovation and experimentation in the photographic art practice.

Lynette Letic chats to her about her practice and plans for the year ahead.

Congratulations on winning the QCP award! What have you been up to since the grad show?
Thank you! Most of the last six months were spent working on my grad work Heartbeats and very little else so it’s still pretty surreal to have finished that. I honestly haven’t been doing much since the grad show, just recuperating and planning what I could do next.

How have you reconciled your photography practice with an unconventional printing process? This marriage of mediums is evident in your grad work.
I took up a printmaking class at the start of the year, initially just for something different, but it had a really big influence on my photographic work. I became really interested in manipulating the digital image in a physical way and the idea of photographic ‘originals’ or ‘one-offs’. I experimented with “double printing” portraits with an inkjet printer and ended up making my series Head Space, but that didn’t feel like I was pushing the idea far enough. After that I experimented and found a way to interfere with the printed inkjet photograph by manipulating the ink which then made something similar to a wet printmaking plate that I would transfer onto paper to make one unique object.

Can you tell me a little bit about the techniques you employed to interfere with the ink on the photograph? The brush strokes suggest painting, but I am also curious as to whether you used your hands and fingers to manipulate the inks?
I mostly used my fingers and hands but I did use paper and plastic a bit too, however not as much. There is a certain quality I get from using my hands that I haven’t been able to replicate with any other tools. There is an emotional level to the works that does translate better when I use my hands also, it keeps the movements and strokes personal and raw.

Is this something you think you will explore further in your practice?
Definitely! It’s been one of the only things I’ve thought about since the grad show. It took a lot of experimenting but I’ve finally created my own image making technique, and that’s something I’ve aspired since I started my degree, so I won’t be stopping anytime soon.

You also have a strong interest in fashion and fine art photography. Does a crossover between the two mediums occur in your work, or perhaps one influences the other? If not, do you tend to keep projects separate?
I find that they are both good ways of visually exploring concepts, but the fine art practice definitely aids my fashion work. Last year I made a series called Your Lover that explored the nature of intimacy, and I tried to recreate it with only one model and an animated piece of fabric in each image. Visually, I approached the work like a fashion shoot but there was a lot more going on behind the scenes that I would say was more fine art way of working and I think without that the series wouldn’t have been as successful.

What motivates your photography, visually or otherwise?
Experimenting and playing around. I get pretty excited when things start to happen either from accident or experiment then that excitement usually fuels me to keep going and make more or push it further. If I’m not excited by it then it’s not going to work.

What are your plans for next year? What projects do you wish to undertake?
Ideally I would love to find an artist residency where I could continue exploring my new technique, but even without one I’ll still be working on it. I have a few small fashion projects in mind that I will hopefully tackle soon, and I’ve also got a couple small film projects slowly taking shape. I also really want to go back to Cunnamulla where I was born and make documentary style portraits. I might be being a little too ambitious. I also want to head to Europe.
